England's smoking ban in enclosed public places will come into force on 1st July 2007. England will be the last part of the United Kingdom to ban smoking inside public areas. Scotland introducted its own ban at the end of March 2006, and both Wales and Northern Ireland will have a ban in place in April 2007. The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) has several concerns over the Government's current proposals for fines under the ban - proposals to fine licensees up to £2500 seems somewhat hefty if someone lights up on your licensed premises.
